The "war memorial" in the city park survived the bombing of the Second World War almost unscathed. Its external appearance also survived attempts by the council and administration to remove it (1955) or to move it and radically redesign it as part of a grove of honor (1965). Finally, in 2007, it and its surroundings were given a dignified redesign and a new meaning as a memorial for all victims of war and violence, but also as a memorial for reconciliation, understanding and peace.

The memorial was made from a stone block that was placed north of the "heath hill" and was intended to resemble a sarcophagus. The stone soldiers' heads attached to the narrow sides came from the workshop of Albert Mazzotti (1882 - 1951), and the design of the memorial as a whole was by Wilhelm Wucherpfennig (1894 - 1970).
The Borken stonemasonry company Josef Sondermann was responsible for the construction of the stone block and the engraving of a memorial motto and the names of 176 fallen soldiers. The inauguration of the memorial was one of the highlights of the anniversary celebrations and took place on Sunday, September 12, 1926 with great participation from the population.
