Aldeia da Luz

The new Aldeia da Luz was built to rehouse the inhabitants of the old village of Luz, which had been submerged by the waters of the Alqueva dam. The new village was built in such a way as to essentially maintain the characteristics of the old village.
The issue of rehousing the inhabitants of the village of Luz began in 1981. Three options were considered: compensating the inhabitants, transferring them to a neighbouring village or building a similar village. The latter option was chosen, being the preferred option by the population.
The works began in 1998 and were completed in 2002.
