The basilica is a Late Romanesque, three-aisled brick church whose interior has been redecorated in Baroque style.

In "Crempene" originally a port city was to be built, an idea that was not realized because the draft of the newer ships did not allow access to the Baltic Sea. Thus, the port city was moved to today's Neustadt and "Crempene" was "Olden Krempe."

The construction of the basilica is after 1190 or at the beginning of the 13th century under the Schauenburg Count Adolf III. However, the construction period lasted for a long time, as shown by differences in details. However, nothing is known about the builders themselves. The basilica was renovated in 1900/01 and 1974.

Sights include the 13th-century bronze bronze baptismal font, epitaphs from 1541-1747, a grave stone from 1587, the pulpit from 1687, the baptismal font from the 17th century, the high altar from 1741, a crucifix from the beginning of the 18th century. Century, and the chandelier and Blaker and the "Sauerorgel" and organ stalls from the 19th century.

The parish Altenkrempe is still patronage parish and its parish includes 25 villages spread over 90 km.
