The fountain "The Lake Constance Rider", by the well-known sculptor Peter Lenk, is definitely an eye-catcher on the Überlingen landing stage.
_________
"In 1999, based on a clay model, the city council commissioned the sculptor Peter Lenk (*1947) to create a fountain for the landing stage. The theme was to be an incident according to which the Alsatian postman Andreas Egglisperger had ridden from the Swiss shore across Lake Constance to Überlingen without realising it during the frozen lake in early January 1573. This story had already inspired Gustav Schwab (1792-1850) to write his ballad "The Rider and Lake Constance".
There was great surprise when the fountain was unveiled: it was not a historical figure sitting on the horse, but Martin Walser (1927-2023) - one of the most important German writers of the 20th century and a citizen of Überlingen since 1968. With skates on his feet, the artist, known for his satires, takes aim at Martin Walser because his views sometimes put him on the slippery ice of German history. would be issued.
The scandal, which spread far beyond the city, prompted the two local financial institutions to withdraw their financing commitment. The portraits of the directors at the time are part of the fountain basin as "Lurch" and "Fischdrücker" respectively."
