That Leerdam was a fortified city from way back can still be seen in the beautiful Zuidwal with its mouse towers. The city wall, with its four gates, was probably built at the end of the fourteenth or beginning of the fifteenth century. The lower parts of the mouse towers were also built around that time. The lower parts of the towers protected the wall against drifting ice and the water of the river Linge. And in times of war, cannons were placed on the mouse towers to defend the city.

But where does the name 'Muizentorentjes' come from? Around 1837, a quay was built and three houses were built on the remains of the old and dilapidated wall towers. But no one dared to live in the wall towers. This was because the enemy could enter your house across the water. As a result, the towers remained deserted... Mice and rats could live happily in these towers because of this. Hence the name: Muizentorentjes.
Today, these towers are still inhabited or in use. For example, one of the towers houses a cozy and snug coffee & tea house.
