Castle Steps and Castle Moat
The 178 castle steps climb a height of 34m from Angergasse to the castle. The mass of one step, made of mica schist, is approximately 220kg.
As with most medieval castles, a drawbridge secured the entrance. The sliding chutes of the bridge's weights can still be seen today in the castle complex beneath the castle entrance.
After the reconstruction of the castle, which was destroyed for the third time in the Thirty Years' War, the bridge was removed and the moat filled.
Among the Lichtensteiners, a story is told about a princess who was to be married against her will. Since the desperate woman could not, under any circumstances, accept the man chosen for her and dared not object, her only option was to flee. When the unfortunate woman jumped from the castle wall during her escape, her foot left an imprint as it landed on the steps. This can still be seen today
on the second pedestal from the top.
