The Varendonk nature reserve is located in the eponymous sub-municipality of Laakdal. On the left bank of the Grote Laak, this area with a surface area of approximately 100 ha extends from Steenrotsen (opposite the Roost nature reserve) to the confluence of the Grote Laak with the Grote Nete. At Blaardonk we find a few farms, where nature is interwoven with agricultural use. On the other bank of the stream lies the Trichelbroek. These areas, which are managed by Natuurpunt, form a beautiful natural whole here. With a soil that changes from sand to sandy loam, Varendonk is, as it were, the sandy supplement of Trichelbroek and the Roost, where the soil is mainly composed of clay and peat.

The Grote Steenweg (N127) runs along the area and also literally cuts a piece out of the donk or sand ridge of Varendonk.
