One of the biggest difficulties was supplying water to the canal on the watershed, for which Riquet developed a complex system of aqueducts and reservoirs, including the innovative dam at Lac de Saint-Ferrรฉol, considered one of the greatest engineering feats of the time.
This reservoir collected rainwater from the Montagne Noire and channeled it into the canal, allowing year-round navigation.
