As the oldest mountain distillery in Germany, the Grassl distillery has had the sole right to harvest the protected gentian roots, master roots and cranberry berries (juniper) in what is now the Berchtesgaden Alpine National Park since 1692. The valuable high mountain specialties are produced using traditional distilling techniques in traditional distillery huts and in the valley distillery with great craftsmanship. They mature in old wooden barrels underground in deep rock tunnels.

The brothers Martin and Florian Beierl are the owners and managing directors of the Grassl gentian distillery, the oldest gentian distillery in Germany. Only Martin and Florian Beierl have the right to harvest gentian in the Berchtesgaden National Park every 10 years.
