Porta Montanara is a historic city gate dating back to the 14th century. It was built in the 14th century and served as an entrance to the city from the hills. The gate was part of the defensive works built by the Malatesta family to protect the city. Between 1619 and 1621, the city's defensive system was modified. A new road, Via Malatesta Novello, was built and a new gate, Porta Nuova, was built. The original Porta Montanara was integrated into the sferisterio (a playing field for ball games) and is still recognizable in the outline of the building.

The gate was part of the medieval walls of Cesena, known as the "Murata". These walls were described by Cardinal Anglico de Grimoard in 1371.

On the gate is an inscription by Renato Serra, an Italian writer, which contains a passage from his work "Esame di coscienza di un letterato". The text describes a walk from Piazza del Popolo to the gate.
