Bostel is an old farming village and was first documented in 1060 as Buotenburstal. It belonged to the parish of Groß Hehlen and was located on an important trade route (Dietweg/Salzstraße), but declined in importance from 1292 onwards due to the founding of Neu-Celle and the shift in traffic flows.
In 1313, the village was called Berstolde, from 1330 Borstelde, and around 1430 Borstel. The village was the seat of the Gogreve (judge in the judicial district), who lived on the old manor (Edelhof).

The old Edelhof had many different owners over the centuries and was mostly leased out.
In 1751, a fire broke out there, which quickly spread and almost completely destroyed the entire village. In 1882, the Edelhof burned down again. Since November 2005, the Bostel Manor has housed the Bostel Manor retirement home.

The old farming village lost its independence in 1973 and became a district of the city of Celle.
