The Church of the Order of the Philippine Order was built in the years 1688–1724 in the Baroque style. Its designer is unknown, but it is believed that it may have been the Italian architect Francesco Solari. A monastery of the Philippine Order was built near the church. In 1974, the church was raised to the rank of a minor basilica.
During the Easter Resurrection in 1940, soldiers from Major Henryk Dobrzański's "Hubal" unit entered the church (located 20 m from the German gendarmerie station), filled with believers.
