In the 19th century, the ash was used not only for soda production, but also for heating and as fertilizer. It was also used in gunpowder production. The antiseptic effect of the seaweed (iodine tincture) was also used in medicine, and around 15 kg of iodine was extracted from 25 tons of seaweed. Napoleon once had factories built in Brittany in which iodine could be extracted from the leaves. Today, the seaweed fishermen go out in a boat and harvest seaweed on site using a kind of lawnmower. Their products are now mainly used in naturopathy and the food industry.
