The Østervold in Randers runs roughly where the old city fortifications around Randers ran 500 years ago. Houmeden bordered the fortification on the other side, so it's easy to see on a map how small Randers was at the time.

The fortification protected the city from robbers and enemies and helped control trade. All merchants had to pay customs on their goods at one of the fortification's thirteen city gates.

The old city gates are now long gone, but since the 1990s, Randers Municipality has built new interpretations of the city gates. One of these is Red Fall, which is located at the foot of the Östervold. It was designed by the artist Ingvar Cronhammar and is one of the first five new city gates. See the oldest city gate at Laksetorvet.

The most famous sculpture on both the Østervold and in all of Randers, however, is the Jutland Stallion, which stands at the top of the Østervold. The statue not only marks Randers' long history of large horse markets, but also the great importance that the markets had for the city's economy and development. The horse markets could accommodate over 2000 horses at once until the 1940s and took place on Torvegade.
