The pavilion at Mönckebergbrunnen next to Barkhof and underground station has been redesigned into the new Elbphilharmonie Kulturcafé. Hamburgers and visitors to the city can find information about the Hamburg cultural offerings and buy tickets for concerts and cultural events. Information from all cultural institutions - large or small, state or private - is presented centrally.

The architect of the temple-like building was Fritz Schumacher, who campaigned for this fountain instead of another large building corresponding to the buildings in the adjacent Kontorhaus district. The fountain is dedicated to Johann Georg Mönckeberg (1839 - 1908), Hamburg's mayor at the time of the great fire in 1842. In 1926, the artist Georg Wrba (1872 - 1939) created the two flanking bronze figures of Adam and Eve - each supporting itself off on a sea lion - and the lions in the center, alluding to the nickname of the mayor. The lion, badly damaged by the effects of the war in 1944, was reconstructed in 1965 by the sculptor Philipp Harth (1885 - 1968).

After completion in 1915, the Hamburg bookhouses used the pavilion as one of the first public “Volkslesehallen”.
Later, hamburgers were sold here for a long time - no, no ulk, because of course we mean fast food. To this day, it is questionable whether the nearby bone hewn apartment with wall decorations from butchery activities had given rise to that time.

The fountain was built in memory of Johann Georg Mönckeberg, the mayor during the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842. The fountain has a central pillar on which stands a lion, referencing the nickname of the Mönckeberg. The central column is flanked by bronze figures of Adam and Eve, each supported by a sea lion.

The Mönckeberg fountain with its water-spouting sculptures is one of the most popular monuments in Hamburg's city center. Two nudes with sea lions flank a stele crowned by a lion. The fountain in front of the former library was built between 1914 and 1926 according to plans by the chief building director Fritz Schumacher.
The design of the nudes with sea lions goes back to Georg Wrba, the lion is a free replica of the original that was destroyed in World War II.
