The fountain was built in memory of Johann Georg Mönckeberg, the mayor during the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842. The fountain has a central pillar on which stands a lion, referencing the nickname of the Mönckeberg. The central column is flanked by bronze figures of Adam and Eve, each supported by a sea lion.

The Mönckeberg Fountain, with its water-spouting sculptures, is one of Hamburg's most popular monuments in the city center. Two nudes with sea lions flank a stele crowned by a lion. The fountain, located in front of the former public library, was built between 1914 and 1926 according to plans by Chief Building Director Fritz Schumacher.
The design of the nudes with sea lions is by Georg Wrba; the lion is a free replica of the original, which was destroyed in World War II.
