The Viermarkenbaum is a historical border point in southern Westphalia where the areas of Hohenlimburg, Letmathe, Ergste and Berchum meet. The name derives from the meeting of these four "marks" or districts. A plane tree was planted at this location in 1960 and has served as a symbolic center since then.
The Viermarkenbaum is not only an important historical monument, but also a popular destination for hikers and cyclists. Various local associations, including those from Hohenlimburg, Letmathe and Oestrich, jointly maintain this place and regularly organize events to honor its importance. For example, in 2020, on the occasion of the plane tree's 60th anniversary, a star hike took place, with participants making a pilgrimage to the Viermarkenbaum from different directions.
For cyclists, the area around the Viermarkenbaum offers varied routes through wooded areas and along historic paths. The region is characterized by rolling hills and well-developed paths that are suitable for both leisurely tours and ambitious cyclists. A particular highlight is the proximity to the Schälk, a mountain range that offers beautiful views and natural paths.
