The Seelhausener See is an approximately 622 hectare open-cast mining lake that emerged from the former Rösa lignite open-cast mine (part of the Goitzsche). It lies mostly in the state of Saxony and to a lesser extent in Saxony-Anhalt.

The town of Seelhausen was dredged over in 1987 during the expansion of the Goitzsche opencast mine. The Seelhausen Lake was created by flooding the remaining opencast mine pit. It lies west of Löbnitz, south of Bitterfeld and north of Delitzsch, in the Saxon Lake District. From the end of July 2000, the lake was filled with 1 m³/s of water from the Mulde via a pipeline[1] until it was destroyed by the Elbe flood in 2002. Since this event, the lake has been fed by the Lober-Leine Canal. According to the LMBV, 96% of the planned reservoir height had been reached in March 2004. The flooding work was completed in 2005.[1] A beach facility has now been built at the flooding site, and further use of the lake as a local recreation area is planned.

To the northwest of the Seelhausen Lake lies the larger Große Goitzschesee. The lake area also includes the Paupitzscher, Holzweißiger, Ludwigsee, Neuhäuser See and Zöckeritzer See with Essigloch and Auensee. The total area of all lakes in the former Goitzsche open-cast mine is estimated at 24 square kilometers.

The Seelhauser See is a residual open-cast mining lake with a water level of 78 m above sea level. Its storage capacity is 74 million m³ with a storage surface of 622 hectares.
