At the end of the 18th century, a small community of Ashkenazi Jews emerged in Bergen op Zoom. They used the attic of the Boterwaag as a synagogue. When they could no longer find a place there, King William I gave them 1,000 guilders to build a synagogue. This was built on the Parade, a part that is now the Koevoetstraat. Two houses were demolished for it, but the medieval cellars remained intact. The synagogue was completed in 1832 and consecrated in 1833.

In 1940, the German occupiers closed the synagogue. The Jewish community, consisting of 60 people, was deported to concentration camps during the war years. The interior of the synagogue was destroyed. Too few Jews survived the war to be able to use the synagogue again in 1945. After that, the building fell into disrepair, until it was placed on the list of monuments in 1973. At that time, it had just become the property of the municipality. A restoration took place in 1973-1974, after which the synagogue was reopened in 1975. Another restoration took place in 1997-1998.

In 2021, two metre-high photos of Mozes de Hes and Walter Süskind were hung on the northern facade of the Bergen synagogue.
Mozes de Hes was the last cantor – or chazan – of the synagogue and the associated Jewish School. De Hes was taken to Auschwitz and murdered.
The second photo is of the well-known Jewish Bergen resident Walter Süskind. He lived in a rented house on Burgemeester Mathonstraat until March 1942 and was transferred to Amsterdam with his wife and daughter. There he managed to save around six hundred children from the Hollandsche Schouwburg from death. He himself, his wife and daughter Yvonneke did not survive the war. They were murdered by the Germans in an extermination camp, somewhere in a concentration camp in central Europe.
The screenplay of the film Süskind (2012) is based on the true story of Walter Süskind.
