As the name of the 42 meter high Obertor suggests, this is the highest point in Ravensburg's old town. Only Veitsburg above the gate is higher up, although it did not belong to the city in ancient times. The district at Obertor is the nucleus of the city. According to the current state of research, the first settlement was built here, under the protection of today's Veitsburg, which was once called Ravensburg and was a ruler's seat of the Guelphs. After the Swabian Guelphs died out, the castle became imperial property and the name of the castle was carried over to the Free Imperial City that was now emerging below the castle.
In the street in front of the gate there is a Romanesque house built in 1179 and the former main office of the Ravensburger trading company, which existed from the 14th to the 16th century.
