As early as 1960, the idea for a "Fragrance and Blind Garden in Friedrichshain" was born, taking advantage of the properties of fragrant plants to enable visually impaired people to experience nature.
The paths were designed to be barrier-free, with raised beds and trimmed yew hedges at waist height guiding visitors. Flowers, perennials, and shrubs, each with a different fragrance, were incorporated into the raised beds, but also throughout the garden. This experience can be further enhanced by works of art integrated into the garden. Works that make sounds or involve rippling water are particularly suitable for this purpose. Thus, the larger-than-life marble sculpture "Mother with Child" by the sculptor Edmund Gomansky (1854-1930) was placed at the center of the complex to provide a sensory experience. This sculpture had stood on Andreasplatz since 1898, but was no longer needed there due to structural changes.
For security reasons, the garden was enclosed with a fence. The entrance and many plants were marked with Braille signs. Unfortunately, more and more of the original signs were lost due to theft and vandalism, and due to the strained budget situation of the state of Berlin, they could not be replaced.
