The well-known hunting lodge of Emperor Friedrich II is the most impressive medieval building in southern Italy and has been well preserved in its original form to this day. The fort is located high up on a hill and can be seen from afar. Frederick II

Built by Staufferkaiser Friedrich I, the interior was never completed. The shape of the castel remains a mystery to this day. Condition very good.

you cannot come to Puglia without dedicating some time to this castle. Although devoid of furnishings and stripped over time of marble and other precious things, it remains a unique example of its kind.

The most famous legend has it that on the hill on which the castle stands (declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site) there was an ancient temple with a statue engraved with an enigma: it was solved by a Saracen, who digging on the hill found a treasure that he used to build Castel del Monte.

When Emperor Frederick II built this castle near Bari in the 13th century, he gave it a symbolic meaning that is reflected in the location, the mathematical and astronomical precision of the plan and the perfectly regular shape. Castel del Monte is a unique piece of medieval military architecture and a successful blend of elements from classical antiquity, the Islamic Orient and northern European Cistercian Gothic.

A crest of rock that rests on a hill at 540 meters above sea level, dominating the western Murge plateau in Puglia. This is Castel del Monte, a fortress commissioned by Frederick II around 1240 and inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1996. The castle is generally considered a brilliant example of medieval architecture, combining different stylistic elements, from the Romanesque lion cut to the entrance to the Gothic cornice of the towers, to the classical art of interior decoration, to the defensive structure of the architecture, to the delicate Islamic refinements of its mosaics.
Without enclosing walls, moats and stables - elements that characterized most medieval military buildings - Castel del Monte has been attributed by researchers the most diverse functions: temple, secluded place where you can immerse yourself in study, even a place of relaxation along the lines of the Arabic hammam. Some have observed that its rooms appear to be designed as if they had to use an obligatory route to move from one to the other, a connection to astronomical symbols. The octagonal shape, others say, evokes the geometry of a crown to represent the imperial power bestowed upon Frederick II. What is certain is that the ruler, nicknamed "Stupor Mundi" for the eclecticism and depth of his culture, left all the mystery surrounding his person to Castel del Monte.

The fortress was created with extreme geometric and mathematical rigor. The octagonal plan design and the number eight recur almost obsessively: there are eight rooms on the ground floor and first floor and there are eight imposing towers, the plan is obviously octagonal and spread over each of the eight corners. It is believed that there was a pool in the courtyard, also octagonal in shape. The position of the castle has been studied so that at certain times of the year, such as the days of the solstices and equinoxes, there are special effects of light and shadow. Basically, everything seems designed precisely to suggest symbolisms that have fascinated researchers for centuries and leave visitors with a sense of pleasant mysteries.

The interior of the Castel del Monte is the same on both floors: eight trapezoidal rooms, almost all connected, with doors and windows to the inner courtyard. The rooms are each vaulted in three parts, with a ribbed vault over the central square and quasi-barrel vaults over the lateral, triangular sections. The pillars are composed of semi-columns with leaf bases and pink breccia capitals on the ground floor and clusters of three small white marble columns with single capitals on the upper floor. The ribs of white limestone have rosette bosses.
The interior walls were clad with coral breccia slabs or plastered and painted to imitate them; its intense red color was probably meant to suggest imperial purple. The "antique" ambience was also evoked by the mosaic floors on the ground floor; a section with polychrome rosettes survives. Three of the interiors communicate with the courtyard through doors surmounted by pointed arches.
Each room leads to the corner towers, five of which, spanned by octopartite rib vaults on consoles, were designed as utility rooms; The other three, circular on the inside, contained spiral staircases leading to the upper floor. The upper rooms are richly decorated with sculptures made of colored materials. The eight walls of the courtyard are articulated by pointed wall arches rising from pilasters at the corners of the octagon; A balcony once ran around the walls at the top of the arches.

The castle immediately reminds one of the abbey from the film adaptation of "The Name of the Rose."

Upon closer inspection, however, there are differences:
"The Castel del Monte in Apulia, with its octagonal floor plan and octagonal towers, served as the model for the mysterious aedifice. However, upon direct comparison, one notices that the film set was built even higher than the original."
