Two military conflicts took place at the Landwehr, which has a visible length of around 1,600 m in the forest forest: During the Thirty Years' War, the imperial troops were defeated here in 1642 by a combined army of Weimaraners, French and Hessians.

In 1758, during the Seven Years' War, the Prussians fought successfully against the French at the Battle of the Hückelsmay.

The Landwehr is therefore of great historical value and was therefore designated as a ground monument in 1988.

The Landwehr in the forest was created around 1370 at the instigation of the Elector of Cologne between the offices of Kempen and Linn. Both belonged to the electorate, but the Linner office had been owned by the Counts of Kleve for a good 100 years. The land forces were a means to limit the probability, the chances of success, effectiveness and consequences of medieval warfare and thus to prevent them. They also hindered gangs of robbers from entering the area and made it difficult to retreat after raids. The combination of Gebück and Dörn was also well suited for enclosing cattle pastures and as a guideline for hunting and wolf hunting.
