There are no precise details of the castle's foundation. From a construction history perspective, it can be assumed that the lords of Schutzbar, called Milchling, had the castle built in the 13th or 14th century as a square late Gothic residential tower. The residential tower, called the "Alter Stock", has walls around 1.8 metres thick. Of the two Schutzbar, called Milchling, which split into an older and a younger line around 1403, the older and probably wealthier line expanded the castle around 1679 to include the "Neuer Stock" (also called the "Castle on the Water"). By then, the old part of the castle had probably fallen into disrepair. A joint inheritance (castle division) to be negotiated between the brothers Caspar and Hans Schutzbar called Milchling in 1584 is described by the Hessian official as follows:

"Castle seat, but which has now fallen into disrepair and is no longer left of it, then a bare wall, about 60 feet long and 38 feet wide, with a square square all around, about 30 feet wide, less or more, and also surrounded by a moat almost 30 feet wide, in which the forecourt or courtyard belongs, on which several barns and buildings were built. Also several gardens, which were surrounded by a moat and are located around the wall covered by the moat."

Almost nothing is known about the history of the castle. It was probably built in the middle of the 16th century by the older line of the Schutzbar family, known as Milchling.
In the 19th century, an office building was built on the site of the former residential buildings, which served as the official seat of the Electorate of Hesse's Treis Justice Office until 1867.
The approximately 1.1-meter-thick ring walls along the Lumda and, integrated into a small house, a tower with bay windows and corbels on the west side and a mighty round tower, also known as the "Thieves' Tower," on the south side are still evidence of the formerly heavily fortified castle complex.
