    Grande Synagogue, Lausanne
    On Tuesday, October 9, 1909, the foundation stone for the Lausanne synagogue was laid. It was inaugurated on November 7, 1910. When the project was conceived, there was a wealthy Jewish patron of the arts from Bordeaux, Daniel Iffla-Osiris, who, as a sign of gratitude to the Swiss for the reception they had given Bourbaki's army in 1870, bequeathed certain sums to the city of Lausanne in his will. This legacy includes, among other things, the sum of CHF 50,000 made available to the Israelite Community of Lausanne (CIL) so that it can build a synagogue. This one, according to the will, should have the image of the one in Rue Buffault in Paris, a gift from the same patron to the Jews of Paris in 1877.

        The synagogue in Lausanne, the capital of the Swiss canton of Vaud, was built in 1909/10 according to plans by the architects Charles Bonjour, Adrien van Dorsser and Oscar Oulevey. The synagogue at No. 1, Avenue Juste-Olivier is a cultural asset of national importance.

        Around 1860, the city's Jewish families initially rented rooms to hold religious services. In November 1898, a room in the newly built Maison Mercier was rented and converted into a synagogue.

        Rabbi Wertheimer from Geneva suggested building a synagogue. Thanks to a legacy from Daniel Iffla, a patron living in Paris, construction of the synagogue could begin. The inauguration took place on November 7, 1910.
