The Apollo Temple was built in 1735 by the architect Georg Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff and – although modified in 1792 – still forms the centre of the Temple Garden today and gave it its name.

Knobelsdorff created his first architectural work in 1735 with the Apollo Temple in the Amalthea Garden. It was originally an open, six-columned ancient temple, the flat domed roof of which was crowned by an Apollo figure. From 1735 to 1740, the temple was the meeting place for Crown Prince Friedrich's circle of friends.

After the Neuruppin fire, State Minister Otto Carl Friedrich von Voß ordered the restoration of the temple. During the reconstruction in 1791-1793, the columns were bricked up, closing the building and installing windows. In this form, the Gentz merchant family took over the temple and garden from 1853 to 1881. Under Johann Christian Gentz, the complex essentially received its current appearance.

From 1735 to 1740, the temple was a meeting place for Crown Prince Frederick's circle of friends. He received officers, the art-loving Knobelsdorff, musicians and scholars here in a convivial atmosphere. The temple is a document of Frederick's reception of antiquity and an early work by Knobelsdorff, and is therefore of particular architectural value.
