St. Gereon - patron saint of the church in Niederbachem and the old church in Berkum
Catholic memorial day: October 10th
Name means: the old man (Greek-Latin)
† around 304 (?) in the former Mechtenfeld, today between Thebäerstraße and Mechternstraße in Cologne-Ehrenfeld.
According to legend, Gereon was the leader of a detachment of 318 soldiers of the Theban Legion, which had been raised in the Thebaid in Egypt, consisted only of Christians and was to fight Christians on behalf of Emperor Diocletian. But they laid down their weapons. As a result, 300 (-360) companions were martyred with Gereon and many of them were beheaded. Among them were Cassius and Gregorius Maurus; Florentius, Mallusius, Innocentius and Constantinus are also counted among these martyrs on various occasions. Finally, the survivors were killed and thrown into a well.
According to legend, Empress Helena had the predecessor of today's St. Gereon's Church built on the spot where the well was supposed to have been - which could not be proven archaeologically - in the Christian Roman cemetery outside the gates of Cologne. In fact, it was not built until after 345.
Gregory of Tours reported that this church was the burial place for 50 martyrs of the Theban Legion, which was called "ad sanctos aureos", "to the golden saints" because of its rich gold jewelry.

The Gereon's Church in Niederbachem is called the "mother church of the Drachenfelser Ländchen". People have been gathering here for worship and prayer for more than a thousand years. As the oldest parish church in the region, the Niederbachem church was the sending and parish church for an area that extended as far as Berkum and Werthhoven. As late as 1595, the church in Berkum was expressly referred to as a daughter of the church in Niederbachem. As early as the 8th century, there must have been a small wooden chapel on the site of the current church. It was probably no larger than 3.9 x 3.8 meters. It was built as a court chapel for the nearby manorial estate of the Cologne monastery of St. Gereon. Hence its location in the valley of the Mehlemer Bach, away from the actual village center.
