Thanks to such a construction, it was possible to simply replace human or animal muscle power with the power of natural elements using a watercourse - natural or artificial - in order, for example, to grind grain into grain or press oil from fruit.

There are essentially two drive variants for water mills:

* Either the flowing water simply hits the blades of the water wheel from below to set it in motion; or

* The water flow is guided above the wheel - usually through a so-called "mill channel" - and falls onto the blades. This design ensures greater efficiency due to natural gravity.

Location

The Falkenstein watermill is located on the northern edge of the Eifel, south of Mechernich. It is located in the village of Eiserfey. It is located in the floodplain of the Veybach, a tributary of the upper Erft. The stream flows through Devonian limestone here.

Building

The watermill is integrated into the multi-part farm complex built from quarry stone. The farm complex consists of several construction phases, as indicated by the lighter and darker colors of the quarry stone of individual building sections. The mill technology, including the water wheel on the stream side, has been preserved. The buildings and the area around the farm complex are very well maintained. The colorful farm garden is a particular eye-catcher.

Historical events

Until the end of the 18th century, the Falkenstein mill was under the rule of the Elector of Cologne and then became private property. The 1597 documents of the Vussem Weistum show that it had the status of a compulsory mill for this place until the French period. The miller had to collect the grain to be ground from the farmers and then deliver the flour. Since there were three mills in the town, they often got into trouble because there was a lack of ground material and no flour could be delivered to the millers. Dissatisfaction and possibly hunger spread. The Elector was expected to find solutions to problems. Transport was carried out by donkey cart. The last miller was Hubert Falkenstein, who died in 1961. After that, the milling operation was stopped.

Today, the buildings of the farm complex are used as living space.
