Although tradition claims it among the seven parish churches founded by Matilde of Canossa, the origins of the sacred building cannot be recovered through documentation. However, it is probable that it was the intervention of the Guidi Counts, the great lords and 'builders' of these Apennine territories, who made the construction of the church possible, probably between the 11th and 12th centuries. The parish church is mentioned for the first time in a papal bull of 1103 under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Fiesole; then in the following century it passed under the patronage of the Abbey of Vallombrosa. From 1543 the church was governed, at the request of a doctor, by a parish priest and in the 1600s it housed a lazaret.
