His name is closely linked to the "Roland's Arch," one of the most famous architectural achievements of 19th-century Rhine Romanticism. Therefore, it is entirely justified to commemorate the German poet Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810 to 1876) with this monument.

The Freiligrath Memorial is located on the footpath in the Remagen district of Rolandswerth, near Nonnenwerth Island, which leads from Bundesstraße 9 to the Rolandsbogen (Roland's Arch).

The memorial was inaugurated on June 17, 1914, on Ferdinand Freiligrath's 104th birthday, just two months before the outbreak of the First World War.

The stepped monument, made of basalt lava and Franconian shell limestone, has a simple, approximately one-meter-high base at its terraced center. It features a vividly modeled, larger-than-life bronze bust by the London sculptor Siegfried M. Wiens, a nephew of Freiligrath, facing the Rolandsbogen. The monument was erected in honor of Freiligrath and in gratitude for his initiative, which he published in the "Kölnische Zeitung" in January 1840, to rebuild the legendary Rolandsbogen, which had collapsed on the night of December 28-29, 1839. The Freiligrath Monument was also built through a private initiative. Here, too, the funds were raised through donations.

The complex was restored in 2001, with further renovations following in 2010.
