For many years, citizens of Ermershausen fought against the forced incorporation into Maroldsweisach. The 15-year-long struggle was successful and ultimately resulted in the independence of the village in the northern Haßberg district.

As the local member of parliament Steffen Vogel told the Neue Presse, the presidium of the Bavarian state parliament decided on October 20th, on the recommendation of a scientific advisory board, that the municipality of Ermershausen would be honored for its civil society commitment and recognized as a "place of democracy in Bavaria." The reasoning behind this decision was that the citizens of Ermershausen had already campaigned vehemently against the loss of their independence. In order to prevent the municipal records from being handed over to Maroldsweisach, barricades were erected and the town hall occupied. With a large-scale police operation, the incorporation was finally enforced in May 1978.
