At the end of Viale delle Fosse, in the heart of Bassano del Grappa, a statue was erected in honor of General Gaetano Giardino, commander of the Fourth Army from February 1918 and protagonist of the last months of the Great War on Monte Grappa. The inauguration of the monument dates back to August 3, 1936, when the National Fascist Party and the city of Turin donated it to the Venetian municipality. The work is by the Piedmontese sculptor Stefano Borelli, while the large base is by the Roman architect Achille Morbiducci. The approximately 4-meter-high statue shows General Giardino scanning Monte Grappa and Valsugana, the places where he led military operations in the final phase of the conflict. He wears binoculars clearly visible around his neck, while leaning on a stick with his right hand. However, on the base appears a simple dedication with his name and the famous phrase "Monte Grappa you are my homeland", the first verse of the famous song born in the last year of the war.
