The flag of Spain, also known as "la Rojigualda" in Spanish (meaning: "the red and gold yellow"), was introduced on December 19, 1981.
The national flag consists of three horizontal stripes in the colors red-yellow-red, with the middle yellow stripe being twice as wide as the two red ones. The Spanish coat of arms is entirely within the yellow stripe.
The flag without the coat of arms serves as a simplified variant of the commoner and merchant flag. It was already introduced on August 29, 1936. But its origins are even older.
