The Störtebeker Fountain is located in the Lower Street and was a gift to the citizens of the town of 3 Verdener financial institutions on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary in 1985. The fountain is reminiscent of Störtebeker, the legendary pirate. Every year there is the so-called Störtebeker donation three weeks before Easter, during which around 1,600 herrings and over 500 loaves are distributed. This means that more than 600 years after his death, Klaus Störtebeker remains alive in Verden. The pirate is said to come from the region around Verden and Rotenburg and also found one of his many places of refuge in Verden.
