The Gothic brick church of St. Martin dates back to the 13th century and has belonged to the Lutheran Church since the Reformation.

Definitely worth seeing in the church are twelve expressive small sandstone apostle figures from around 1515/20, each with individual facial features and varying posture and size. These figures are attributed to the so-called Snetlagemeister from the workshop of the Master of Osnabrück. They were removed from the church in 1830 and repurchased from the art market in 1987.

Also noteworthy are several valuable epitaphs and tombstones, particularly from the 16th century. Furthermore, a high-relief tombstone for Count Otto VIII of Hoya († 1582) and his wife Agnes is housed in the tower hall.

In front of the Gothic building, the two impressive sculptures of the history-making men Charlemagne (left) and Widukind (right) from 1991, as well as the annotated replica of Guernica by Pablo Picasso, are impressive.

The bronze statues of Widukind (to the right of the church) and Charlemagne (to the left of the church) were erected to commemorate the 550th anniversary of St. Martin's Church in 1991. According to the Nienburg-based creator of these sculptures, Volker Neuhoff, they are considered "a reminder that it is not only military conflicts and deeds that make history, but rather that a reconciliatory approach to one another, working together rather than against one another, should determine the history of the future."

Widukind, who from 777 onwards repeatedly called for and led revolts against the Franks from Denmark, ultimately lost the Saxons' fight for freedom against the "Christian" Franks and their leader, Charlemagne (or Charles). Baptized in Reims in 785 with Charlemagne as his godfather, he was honored with generous gifts by the great pioneer of German and European development instead of being humiliated.
