During the season, "The Shop by the Lake" is normally open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If someone can step in and take over sales, it doesn't close until 5 or 6 p.m. In the late afternoon, René Weidner cannot be in the shop himself. Then he is on the road for work: As an employed driver, he takes people who are cared for in day care back home. Weidner runs the shop as a side job. In the pre- and post-season, i.e. before May 1st and after the end of the summer holidays, it is closed. The main business, says René Weidner, is day tourists. For example, cyclists who are out and about at the reservoir. The cycle path leads across the Spreecamp site near Bagenz - and thus past Weidner's shop. "If the cycle path wasn't right outside the door, I probably wouldn't need to open during the week," says the owner. The weather also plays an important role. If it's too hot or raining, the cyclists stay away. And in the summer, the water in the reservoir sometimes runs out because it flows into the Spreewald. Weidner remembers years gone by: "You could go on a mudflat hike here." The shop cannot survive on permanent campers alone. They come for lunch sometimes. For example, when the goulash cannon is heated up.
