The Fulmar, also known as the Northern Fulmar, is an intriguing seabird that lives mainly in the subarctic regions of the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans. They resemble seagulls, but are easily distinguished by their stiff wings and tubular noses. These birds are pelagic outside the breeding season, feeding on fish, squid and shrimp in the open ocean. They are remarkably long-lived, with a lifespan of up to 40 years. The Fulmar has a unique salt gland that helps desalinate their bodies, a necessary adaptation given the large amount of seawater they consume. These fascinating birds are a wonderful example of the diversity and adaptability of life in nature.
