Atonement cross or murder cross is the name for a stone cross that was erected to atone for a murder or manslaughter that had been committed. Atonement crosses are atonement stones in the shape of a cross. Atonement crosses were usually located on paths and crossroads. Weapons (crossbow, axe or similar) are carved into some stone crosses, possibly the murder weapon.

In the strictest sense of the word definition, a distinction must be made between "commemorative crosses" and "atonement crosses." The latter were to be erected by the perpetrators as part of their atonement (penance) for their crime. In some regions, the term "murder memorial cross" is occasionally encountered.
Memorial crosses, on the other hand, were usually erected by people (often family members, possibly friends or neighbors) close to the deceased (not just for victims of crime).
