The church was built of large brick in the 13th century. Around 1500 work began on enlarging the church.
Due to its high elevation, the church has always been a refuge for humans and animals during flooding.
Legend has it that the church was deliberately destroyed by French troops led by George Duras, Count de Lorge at the end of the 16th century.

At the beginning of the 17th century the church came into Protestant hands. The public practice of Catholic religion was prohibited. A memorial stone in the church still refers to this event. Due to the small number of Protestant churchgoers, financial problems arose and the church fell into disrepair. It was decided to maintain only the choir. This is how this ruined church was created.
