Opposite the south gable is the bell tower. It was built in the early 14th century, free-standing, like most medieval churches in East Frisia, and today even separated from the church by a street. Its facade structure still shows round arches in the lower area, while the blind niches in the gable triangles already contain pointed arches, stylistic features of the transition period from Romanesque to Gothic. The vaulted basement used to house the town scales. Today a memorial to the fallen has been set up there. On the eastern outer wall, a larger-than-life figure of a soldier made of iron clinker, designed in 1927 by the Berlin sculptor Hermann Hosaeus, commemorates the fallen of the First World War.

Since 1992, a carillon from the Dutch bell foundry Eijsbouts has hung in the large eastern sound opening (on the weekly market side). Its 18 very harmoniously sounding bells can be heard four times a day (two minutes before 9, before 12, before 15 and before 18). The polyphonic songs are based on the respective church seasons.

Below the sound arcades and in the gables, it is structured with whitewashed blind arches, while pointed arches predominate in the blind niches of the gable triangle. The basement was formerly used by the town scales. Today it houses a memorial to those who died in the world wars. On the east side of the tower, a figure of a German soldier made of terracotta pieces was attached as a memorial to those who died in the First World War.

Together with the bell tower, the church is the central building on the town's 6,678-hectare market square.
