"Schmidtville" is a historic district in Halifax, founded in 1830 by Elizabeth Schmidt, the wife of Captain Christian Wilhelm Schmidt, as one of the first suburbs outside the fortifications of the city of Halifax. The area quickly developed into a lively little suburb where merchants, artisans, sailmakers and fresco painters lived. It was named "Schmidt's Village" and was characterized by simple buildings in the Georgian style. Increasing popularity and increasing prosperity of this neighborhood led to the construction of isolated buildings in the Victorian style with elaborate ornamentation and mansard roofs. Another architectural feature of this district are the so-called mirror houses, which have an identical but mirrored floor plan and are combined as two-family houses under one roof.
During the 20th century, "Schmidtville" was home to many immigrants of German, Irish, English, Italian and Scottish origin. Several lots were converted into commercial retail space and served as supermarkets, laundries, tailor shops and tobacco shops. Following a major explosion in the city in 1917, two-story houses were expanded to accommodate Halifax's housing shortage.

After World War II and a shift in population to the suburbs, the neighbourhood's housing situation deteriorated. Half of the houses were demolished and converted into parking lots during urban renewal in the 1960s. Despite this, much of the original "Schmidtville" was saved by a government-funded program, which resulted in an influx of new owners who recognized the neighbourhood's value and made loving renovations.

In 2017, Schmidtville won the Great Places in Canada contest as Canada's best neighbourhood, beating out 48 other neighbourhoods. Through the hard work of a ten-year community-led campaign, Schmidtville became Halifax's first residential/mixed-use Heritage Conservation District in 2018, preserving a unique part of Halifax's historic identity.
