A little info about the Wasserkaftwerk: After the takeover of the mill by Wilhelm Vogelsang in 1910, the mill was converted into a hydroelectric power plant.
The power plant hall was restored and still contains generators and turbine parts from the beginning of the 20th century.

On a place in front of the mill, which invites you to take a break, you can still find old gear parts from this power plant.

The Horster mill was one of the oldest Essen mill facilities. It was mentioned as early as the 12th century in connection with the creation of a Ruhr weir. Their original location was about 300 meters upstream on a Ruhr island. When new hydraulic structures were built in 1774 to make the Ruhr navigable, the mill was moved to its current location opposite the new lock. It was operated as an oil, fruit and blue mill. Among other things, cobalt, which came from deposits in the Hespertal on Lake Baldeney, was broken in the Horster mill and used for the blue coloring of slave coats that were exported to the USA. The Horster mill became the property of the industrialist Wilhelm Niemann in Essen in 1846.
In 1910, the factory owner Wilhelm Vogelsang took over the Horster mill and converted the mill into a hydropower plant and a carbide factory. Several factory buildings were built in the restrained brick architecture of that time with striking, segmented roof shapes. The system is dominated by the high chimney with the Vogelsang name, the brickwork of which is structured by bright stone bands. The restored power station hall contains turbine parts and generators, some of which date from the first decades of the 20th century.
Carbide production ended in 1932, the power plant remained in operation until 1977, when it was shut down due to inefficiency. In 1985, the Rudolph & Co. company acquired the listed facility. The hydropower plant was modernized by four new turbines and generators, the original machine equipment in the hall was restored according to museum criteria. The power station has been supplying electricity again since 1989.
