The area of the Petite Camargue Alsacienne - floodplain area and relic of the former primeval forest on the Rhine, was designated by the French government as the first nature reserve in Alsace in 1982. Since July 26, 2006, a new decree has placed the area, which has been expanded to 904 hectares, under nature protection. The extraordinary area is administered by an association made up of conservationists, scientists and politicians.

The lock house, a gateway to the Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve
In 1961 the lock keeper's house was closed after the Hüningen canal was closed. In 2010 it was ecologically converted and renovated and is now the gateway to the Petite Camargue Alsacienne nature reserve. The place offers space for reception, information and socializing, of course with coffee and cake.
Open from March 8 to October 25, 2020
From Wednesday to Friday: 1:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m
Saturday and Sunday: 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

On the circular paths there are several observation towers or shelters that give you the opportunity to observe birds. There are sections of the route that lead along boardwalks.
