From the path there are always supposed paths down to the river. 3/4 of the way down, which leads to the next village, there is a real path down.
From there you can go without crossing the river but not further along the river.
You can climb back up to the actual erg relatively easily in several places.
When going down it is usually not clear whether it is safe to go down.
