Under the King Albert I monument you will find the Westfront visitors centre. You will learn how the German invasion was stopped in 1914 by flooding the polder plain. On top of the monument you will find a 360° view of the sea, the coastal strip and the polders of the Westhoek.

We make one last stop at the Westfront Nieuwpoort Visitor Center before arriving at Nieuwpoort station. The permanent exhibition tells the story of the flooding of the polder plain during the First World War. Thanks to a daring plan and the well-thought-out use of locks and locks, the German invasion at Nieuwpoort was brought to a halt. You can learn more about this special story in the interactive visitor center under the King Albert I monument along the 'De Ganzepoot' lock complex. An impressive 180° projection of the Yser panorama is certainly a highlight. Originally this was a painting 115 meters long and 15 meters high! Tip: take the elevator to the top of the King Albert I monument. You can enjoy a beautiful view of the coast and polders of the Westhoek.
