The new bridge is being built according to the principle of the 'generic bridges' that are used at various locations along the Albert Canal. In the long term, more than 20 similar bridges will be built according to this principle. The bridge will be raised approximately 2 meters to a vertical clearance of 9.10 m. The canal will be widened from 50 m to 86 m.

As part of the capacity increase of the Albert Canal, De Vlaamse Waterweg nv is therefore investing in the further development of the Albert Canal. The current limitation in clearance height and width under the bridges is a bottleneck for inland shipping on the Albert Canal. Raising the bridges to a clearance height of 9.10 m makes it possible for inland vessels with four layers of containers to sail safely and smoothly. In addition, Short Sea Shipping on the Albert Canal will also have better opportunities.

The Kuringen Bridge is a new arched bridge over the Albert Canal in Belgium, replacing two old railway bridges to increase the clearance for shipping. Built between 2019 and 2021, it now allows for a higher clearance of 9.10 meters and widens the canal to 86 meters. In addition to the new railway bridge, a wide bicycle connection was also created.
