The tank traps were part of the Atlantic Wall defences. "It is now a beautiful piece of nature, but we have not yet told this piece of Petten's history."

It is now a nature reserve, but during the Second World War the lake served to get tanks stuck. The village of Petten was almost demolished to be able to build defences. The Germans feared that the Allies would invade via the coast.

During the unveiling of the information board, alderman Jelle Beemsterboer of Schagen said that it is important to tell more about the history of Petten, because Petten is a tourist village. And then the connection is quickly made: "We all know that Germans like to dig holes. Just look at the beach. They have been doing that for a long time."

Remains of the North Atlantic Wall. We found it fascinating that the entire village of Petten was demolished during the war to build defensive structures.
