New and old church in Lyss. Beautiful to look at even when driving past. The old (smaller) one looks even nicer than the new one.

The new Reformed Church in Lyss was built in 1934-35 - according to modified plans by Hans Klauser from 1914. In 1992 a helicopter crashed into the roof of the church and partially destroyed it. In 1995 it was re-roofed with a vaulted roof by Peter Arni. Between the two doors of the main entrance stands a monumental figure of the Good Shepherd, designed by Max Fueter. The stained glass windows, which were largely destroyed by the crash, were replaced by Heidi Reich and Walter Loosli. The pulpit (1675) comes from the Old Church in Lyss.

The Old Church in Lyss (formerly St. Johannes Evangelist) is the oldest and most culturally significant building in the municipality of Lyss. The solid structure with a bent gable roof was built on the foundations of a previous building from the 7th century. The church received its current appearance with the round-arched windows with shell limestone surrounds and the uniform slatted ceiling with the baroque reconstruction from 1672-75. The entrance front of the narrow preaching hall with a polygonal choir end and the canopy on Tuscan wooden columns with stone pedestals is dominated by a roof turret. Of particular interest are the stained glass windows by the Basel artist Hanns Studer, the baptismal font from 1565 and the choir stalls from 1675.
