The figure of Mary itself dates back to 1593 and is attributed to the sculptor Hubert Gerhard. The statue was created for the grave of Duke Wilhelm V and initially adorned the high altar of the Frauenkirche.

The four heroic putti were only added in 1641 and replaced by copies at the end of the 20th century. The originals are in the Munich City Museum.

The Marian Column on Marienplatz has been a reminder of the happy outcome of the Thirty Years' War for Munich since 1638. The monument consists of a golden statue of the Virgin Mary on a marble base. The Marian Column is dedicated to Saint Mary, who is considered the patron saint of Bavaria, "Patrona Bavariae".

Marienplatz with a view of the Marian Column around 1890.

In view of the occupation of Bavaria by the Swedish army, Elector Maximilian I vowed in 1632 "to do a godly work if the local capital and also the city of Landshut were saved from the enemy's final ruin and destruction". After the Swedish troops had left the two cities without causing any damage and Maximilian I had returned to Munich, the Elector set about fulfilling his vow. He decided to hold annual thanksgiving processions in honor of God and Mary and also to erect a monument. In December 1637, the foundation stone for a column with a statue of Mary was laid on the market square - today's Marienplatz (the city council had been bypassed despite the imperial privilege of sole responsibility for the development of the square). The entire court was present at the consecration by Bishop Veit Adam of Freising on November 7, 1638 (source: muenchenwiki.de/wiki/Mariens%C3%A4ule_(Marienplatz)).
