In 1726, the manor owner von Zöbigker had the old church renovated in the Baroque style. A further renovation was carried out in 1883 by the church architect Hugo Altendorff. However, on Pentecost Sunday 1942, the village church burned to the ground due to a smoldering fire in the organ engine and fell into a Sleeping Beauty slumber. Over 60 years later, the site and the church ruins were brought back to life through a work effort. Due to the location in the Leipzig Neuseenland, the “Bicycle Church Zöbigker” project was created. The first cyclist service was celebrated on Easter Monday 2007. Until the renovation is complete, recurring outdoor events will take place annually from Easter Monday to the 1st of Advent, after which the Zöbigker Bicycle Church will function as a reliably open church.

The church ruins belong to the Martin Luther parish of Markkleeberg-West.
