In the early 1900s, the dune top on which villa Mieke Hill was built was a true play paradise for children. A primitive toboggan or slide was placed on this dune. It consisted of wooden planks nailed together and smeared with candle wax. The children slid down the dune at high speed on a wooden sledge.
This villa, built in 1906, was originally called “Chalet de Saint-Idesbald”. Architect Albert Dumont had purchased the chalet and the entire dune. A “tearoom-laiterie” was located in the chalet. From above, one had a beautiful view of the first cottages in the dunes. The dune with the toboggan was an important landmark in the creation of the street plan of Sint-Idesbald; all roads led to the toboggan. After the First World War, in 1923, architect Alexis Dumont designed a brick villa to replace the wooden chalet. She was named Mieke Hill, after a daughter of Albert Dumont.
